Al Rashidi, a Paralympic athlete carrying the UAE flag and the dreams of an entire generation

Becoming the most prominent face of the Dubai 2025 Asian Youth Para Games did not overwhelm Darwish Al Rashidi; instead, it filled him with great pride. When Darwish sprinted across the track carrying the UAE flag in the promotional video for the Games, he had no idea that moment would make him one of the most recognisable young faces of the event. The video quickly went viral, transforming the shy Emirati table tennis player into a symbol of pride, courage, and youthful spirit.

At just twelve years old, Darwish stepped into one of the most significant moments of his young life, representing the UAE for the first time at the Dubai 2025 Asian Youth Para Games. With a calm smile and a spark of excitement in his eyes, he entered the arena not only as an athlete, but as a child discovering his future and who he aspired to become. Although table tennis was the sport he competed in, Darwish’s heart belonged to football. With a broad smile, he said, “If I had the chance to choose between football and table tennis, I would choose football.”

Darwish’s ambitions extended far beyond table tennis or football. With a curious and energetic spirit, he revealed, “I want to discover more sports,” adding that cycling is next on his list. At home, life was filled with noise and laughter. He was the middle child among four siblings—two brothers and two sisters. When he was not training at the club, Darwish enjoyed simple moments with his family, playing the board game Ludo.

Born with a right upper limb disability, Darwish spoke about it with strength and maturity beyond his years. Throughout his journey, the support he received from the UAE and from his Dubai-based club meant a great deal to him. Smiling warmly, he said, “They were very good. They supported me and the other athletes.”

As he took part in the Asian Youth Para Games, his goal was clear and humble: “I wanted to gain experience and understand how the Games work.” Recently, Darwish became a social media sensation after a video of him running proudly with the UAE flag went viral. Becoming the face of the Games did not overwhelm him—it became a source of immense pride.
